Tips for First Time Dance Moms - Dance Mom Central

Hi there! As I step into my fifth year as a dance mom (competition), I can honestly say this journey has been a mix of learning, laughter, moments of feeling overwhelmed, and countless cherished memories with my little dancer. If you’re new to this world, welcome! I wanted to share some tips and insights that will hopefully help you navigate this exciting new chapter with more ease and confidence.

Communication is Key

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that communication is everything. Whether it’s with your dance studio, your child’s dance teacher, or other dance parents, keeping the lines of communication open is crucial. Don’t be shy about asking questions or seeking clarification. If you’re unsure about schedules, costumes, or expectations, it’s always better to ask. Staying informed helps you feel more prepared and less stressed.

Ask Questions, but Vet the Answers

It’s perfectly okay to ask questions—lots of them! But it’s also important to vet the answers you get. Make sure the advice aligns with your values and feels supportive rather than judgmental. You want to create a positive experience for both you and your dancer, so seek out sources that uplift and empower you.

Find Veteran Dance Moms

Experienced dance moms can be a goldmine of information. They’ve been through it all and often have great advice and tips to share. Don’t hesitate to introduce yourself and ask for guidance. Most veteran dance moms are happy to help newcomers and share their knowledge about everything from packing the perfect dance bag to surviving competition weekends.

Find a Fellow New Dance Mom

Finding your new mom tribe can be incredibly helpful. Having the common experience of being new to the dance journey can create strong bonds and mutual support. I personally have a go-to partner—we keep each other accountable, help fill in the blanks, and navigate this journey together. Knowing I have someone I can chat with, free of judgment, has been key to my survival.

Join Dance Mom Forums

You’re not alone! There are countless other dance moms out there who have the same questions and concerns as you. Online forums and social media groups can be fantastic resources. These communities provide a space to ask questions, share experiences, and find support. Just remember to take advice with a grain of salt and do what feels right for you and your dancer.

Be Encouraging and Supportive

Your dancer looks to you for encouragement and support. Cheer them on, celebrate their efforts, and remind them that it’s all about having fun and learning. Dance can be demanding, so your positive reinforcement can make a big difference in their confidence and enjoyment.

Go with the Flow & Enjoy the Journey

Things won’t always go as planned, and that’s okay. There will be moments of chaos, last-minute changes, and unexpected surprises. Embrace the experience and go with the flow. Flexibility and a sense of humor will help you navigate the ups and downs with grace.

Above all, remember to enjoy the journey. These moments with your little dancer are precious and fleeting. Take time to savor the performances, the practices, and even the long competition days. Each experience adds to the beautiful tapestry of your dance journey.

To all the first-time dance moms out there: you’ve got this! Trust yourself, lean on your community, and cherish every step of the way. Welcome to the wonderful world of dance!
