Dance Big Sister/Brother Little Sister/Brother - Dance Mom Central

Does your studio have a Big Sister/Brother, Little Sister/Brother program? If so, it has the potential to be such a fun and meaningful experience when done well!

What Are Big Sisters/Brothers and Little Sisters/Brothers

Think of it like having a built-in dance buddy! The Big Sister/Brother is typically an older or more experienced dancer, while the Little Sister/Brother is often younger or newer to the competition world. The pairing creates a bond where the Big Sister/Brother can serve as a mentor, cheerleader, and role model, while the Little Sister/Brother has someone to guide her/him and offer encouragement.

Most studios pair Bigs and Littles through random drawings, matching dancers within the same competition teams, or pairing based on personality and interests. Some studios even make it a surprise, revealing the matches through fun games or special announcements.

Once paired, it’s all about having fun, supporting each other, and creating memories together!

How Do Big and Little Sisters/Brothers Bond?

Being a Big or Little Sister/Brother is about so much more than just exchanging gifts. It’s really about building a connection both in and outside the studio. Sure, I get it—everyone’s schedules are super busy, but if you get the chance, try to do something fun together!

Here are some fun ways to connect:

  • Practice Together: Work on competition routines or stretch together before classes. Big Sisters/Brothers can share their best tips for nailing turns or leaps!
  • Host a Movie Night: Get together outside of dance for some creative fun! Watch a dance-themed movie like “Leap” ,“Ballet Shoes, or “Honey: Rise Up and Dance”!
  • Make Matching Crafts:  Decorate water bottles, create friendship bracelets, or customize tote bags with your studio colors.

  • Snack Swap: Pack each other’s favorite treats for conventions.
  • Ice Cream Social: After class (or even before), stop by a local ice cream shop together and enjoy a scoop of your favorite flavor!
  • Plan Matching Outfits or Accessories: Show off your Big/Little bond by coordinating matching outfits or accessories. Whether it’s matching hair bows, t-shirts, or socks, it’s a fun way to stand out as a duo at conventions and competitions.

  • Create a Secret Cheer or Handshake: Nothing says “dance duo” like a special handshake or secret cheer you do before taking the stage. It’s a fun way to calm nerves and get excited for performances.

  • Participate in a Big Sister/Little Sister Dance:  Some studios choreograph a special routine that pairs Bigs and Littles together. This activity is a blast because it’s a chance to dance side-by-side, highlight your teamwork, and create a performance that’s unique to your bond.

  • Write Notes of Encouragement: A handwritten note can go a long way in boosting confidence. Big Sisters/Brothers can write words of wisdom for their Littles, while Little Sisters/Brothers can share their gratitude with a sweet thank-you card.
